Several years ago I was involved in our Church Prison Ministry and we traveled all over Missouri to the Prisons and held Church Services for the Inmates. Once when we were at the Chillicothe Women's Prison, I met a very nice lady and we have been communicating through snail mail for many years (since 1988). She was brutally abused by her husband and he also abused their two children (son & daughter) and because he was a cop, she couldn't call the cops because they were all his friends. She left him and he stalked her and wouldn't leave her alone, so she felt that there was really no way out of this situation so she shot him. This happened in 1978 in Springfield, MO and she received a Capital Murder charge of 50 years to life with no parole. Recently back in Nov. 2007, our Gov. of MO signed a bill for long time offenders who have not had prior convictions and have served a large amount of their time to be released. Well, she's still waiting for her parole hearing and they are really dragging their feet. I went to see her on the 4th Of July and we visited for 2 1/2 hours and she is very down & depressed about all this. She's now in a different prison in Vandalia, MO. She has served 30 years and really should be out of there. It was self defense as a result of domestic abuse and enough is enough already. I was wondering if you all would be kind enough to drop her a postcard from your state and say a few words of encouragement to lift her spirits? It would be greatly appreciated and would really cheer her up. Can you imagine being in prison for 30 years because you killed your husband as a result of abuse? Her address is: Roberta Carlene Borden #81447 W.E.R.D.C.C., 2B-104 1101 E. Highway 54 P.O. Box 300 Vandalia, MO 63382 She is at Women's Eastern Reception Diagnostic Correctional Center. http://www.doc.mo.gov/division/adult/werdcc.htm You can also e-mail her through a service called Jpay.com, but you have to buy stamps on-line on their website. She can receive your e-mails but cannot reply back on-line but this way she gets them right away. Thank you very much and send her a silly postcard if you have one on hand. Much Thanks!!! Sandy...
